Correspondence and other files of Patricia L. Poteat as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, then as Special Assistant to the Provost, and finally as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In all three positions, her responsibilities were essentially the same, chiefly relating to newly developing areas of research in which the University was becoming involved. Of particular interest are files on the care and use of animals in research, which reflect the University's efforts to deal with criticism from animal rights advocates. There are also substantial files on initiatives ion biotechnology and cognitive science and on the University's involvement in the proposed Southern Observatory for Astrophyical Research (a 4-meter telescope in Chile). Items dated prior to 1988 are background materials relating to these areas.
